Dr Robyn O'Connell

Clinical Psychologist, Autism Assessment

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, and I have worked in the NHS and privately since 2007, in various services for adults, young people and their families. This includes working in an NHS adult psychological therapies clinic, and as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the NHS in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). These NHS roles involved providing neurodevelopmental assessments and offering support to neurodivergent individuals and their families.

I currently provide an autism assessment clinic with my team, and we offer assessments to adults, young people, and children. At our clinic we offer a thorough assessment of autism, including a full developmental history, consideration of information from different sources, and use of the ADOS-2 standardised tool (as recommended in NICE guidelines).

Having a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be helpful for the individual and those around them to understand them and their needs. At our clinic we understand autism as being a difference, and therefore believe in providing not simply a
diagnosis, but a tailored profile unique to the individual, including their strengths and any areas in which support might be needed.

As a Clinical Psychologist I am trained to provide support to individuals and families with a variety of different therapeutic approaches. At the core of my approach is holding the people I work with in mind with compassion and kindness. I provide a safe, confidential space, where people are met with warmth. My aim is to support individuals and families through the assessment process, and to facilitate acceptance and understanding of what it means to be neurodivergent.
