Sarah Brooks
Family Therapist
Hello, my name is Sarah Brooks and I am a UKCP registered Systemic and Family Therapist.

Systemic and family therapy looks at the relationships and situations around a person, as well as what they may be feeling or experiencing individually. These can include family, partners, friends, work, school, and other important parts of life.

Sometimes people get caught in patterns of communicating or responding to one another that leave everyone feeling stuck. Therapy offers a space to understand those patterns, hear different perspectives, and explore new ways of relating. It isn’t about deciding who is to blame or who is “the problem.”

You don’t have to come with your whole family. You can attend on your own, with a partner, or with family members, depending on what feels useful and appropriate. I will work with you to agree what to focus on and how the sessions might help.

People come for many reasons: difficulties with communication, conflict, changes or loss, parenting concerns, or simply wanting to understand their relationships better. You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting. We can begin with what feels most important to you.

I welcome people from all cultural, religious backgrounds and aim to offer a respectful, open space where each person’s experiences, values and beliefs are heard. I recognise that I may not understand every aspect of someone’s culture, so I’ll stay curious, listen, and invite you to tell me what feels important.

Systemic family therapists work with a wide range of concerns, especially when relationships or life circumstances are part of what’s making things difficult. For example:
-
Conflict or communication difficulties between family members or partners and ex-partners
-
Parenting challenges, including disagreements about how to support a child
-
Children or teenagers struggling with emotions, behaviour, school, friendships or identity
-
Changes such as separation, a new baby, a blended family, or moving home
-
Grief, illness, or other stressful events affecting the family
-
Repeated patterns that leave people feeling stuck or misunderstood
-
Families who have experienced abuse from inside and/or outside the family
-
Tension between family members across generations
-
Supporting a family when one person is experiencing mental health difficulties, addiction, or other challenges
Special Interests
I warmly welcome adoptive, foster and special guardianship families, and bring experience of supporting the particular strengths and challenges that can be part of these journeys; some of this work is supported by the Adoption Support Fund. I also enjoy working alongside families with neurodivergent or non-binary members, offering a respectful and inclusive space where each person can feel heard, understood and valued.
